The Challenge
A local education authority required help to introduce greater control over access and foot flow to the upstairs areas of a specialist school.
The solution needed to provide appropriate separation and access control while fitting sympathetically within the existing school environment. Rather than introducing a visually intrusive barrier, the aim was to create a solution that felt like a natural part of the building.
The Solution
We designed, supplied and installed a bespoke glass balustrade system to the school's upstairs mezzanine area.
The existing materials and finishes were carefully matched to ensure the new installation complemented the surrounding environment.
The completed system incorporated:
- Structural shoe profile
- 21.5mm toughened and laminated safety glazing
- 48mm diameter stainless steel posts
- 48mm diameter stainless steel handrails throughout
- Integrated access control hardware
The combination of structural glazing and stainless steel provided the required separation and control while maintaining visibility across the space.
Delivered During the School Holidays
With the project taking place within a live school environment, timing was particularly important.
We completed the supply and installation during the school holidays, minimising disruption to staff and pupils and ensuring the area was ready for use when the school reopened.
The Result
The finished installation provides the school with a robust, carefully considered balustrade and access control solution that works with the existing architecture rather than against it.
