How much does switchable glass cost in the UK? The answer depends on the complete specification, not just the glass area. Panel sizes, the switching technology, glazing construction, controls and installation all affect the quotation.
A tailored quote, not a universal price per square metre
We Supply Glass quotes switchable glazing to suit each project. This guide does not publish a price range or a starting price: without an agreed specification and scope, a figure could be misleading. Use it to understand what your quote should cover, then request a quotation for your sizes and requirements.
What Affects Switchable Glass Pricing?
1. Glass units or retrofit switchable film
Integrated switchable glass incorporates the switching layer within a manufactured glazing unit. Retrofit switchable film is applied to suitable existing glass. Film may avoid the cost and disruption of replacing the glazing, but it still needs compatible glass, electrical connections, edge detailing and installation.
Do not compare a film-only material price with a complete installed glass system. Ask which option is suitable for the environment and what work is included. Our smart glass versus privacy film comparison explains the differences.
2. Panel dimensions, quantities and processing
The total area matters, but so do the dimensions and number of individual panels. Large panes can require different handling arrangements; several smaller panes can involve more connections and installation work. Shapes, holes, notches and other processing also need to be specified before manufacture.
A square-metre rate alone cannot show the full cost of a bespoke project. Provide a panel schedule with approximate widths, heights and quantities, and confirm final dimensions before ordering.
3. The glass build-up and performance requirements
An internal partition and an external window or rooflight need different glazing specifications. Glass thickness, safety requirements, laminated construction, insulated units, thermal performance and acoustic requirements can all change the scope.
Compare quotations against the same glass build-up and intended application. Switchable technology does not replace the normal safety and performance requirements of the glazing system.
4. The switching technology
Traditional privacy, reverse switchable, solar switchable and blackout solutions are not interchangeable specifications. Choose the required clear, private, tinted or dark state first, including what should happen when power is off. Traditional frosted privacy glass diffuses light; it is not a substitute for a blackout specification.
Explore our switchable glass range and its four switching options to establish which system suits your project before comparing costs.
5. Power supplies, controls and electrical work
The quote should clarify the power supply or controller, switches, cabling and any automation integration. Separate control zones or integration with a smart home or building management system may require additional design and equipment.
Confirm who provides the mains supply and carries out the electrical connections. Accessible controller locations and planned cable routes can help avoid changes to completed walls, ceilings or frames. See our switchable glass installation guide for planning details.
6. Site access and installation
Installation depends on the location, access, panel weight, supporting system and surrounding finishes. Removal of existing glazing, work at height, specialist lifting, restricted working hours and making good can change the work required. Supply-only and supply-and-install quotations cover different responsibilities.
How to Compare UK Quotes Like for Like
Ask each supplier to state what is included and excluded in writing. A lower headline price is not necessarily a lower completed-project cost.
- Product: integrated glass or applied film, switching type, sizes, quantities and glazing build-up.
- Glazing system: frames, seals, fittings and any replacement or adaptation of existing components.
- Electrical scope: controllers, switches, cable routes, mains connection and commissioning responsibilities.
- Site work: survey, delivery, installation, lifting or access equipment, removal and disposal, and making good.
- VAT: whether the quoted figures include or exclude VAT and the total payable.
- Terms: quote validity, lead time, payment schedule, warranty coverage and aftercare arrangements.
If a quotation is supply-only, obtain the installation and electrical costs separately before comparing it with an installed price. Ask how changes to dimensions, specification or site conditions will be priced.
What About Running Costs?
Running costs depend on the selected system, glass area, time spent powered and your electricity tariff. Traditional PDLC privacy glass is powered in its clear state; other switching technologies operate differently. Ask for the specified power consumption of the complete system, including its controller, rather than assuming every product uses the same amount.
To estimate electricity use, multiply the system's power in kilowatts by its powered hours, then multiply the resulting kilowatt-hours by your tariff. Confirm any standby consumption separately. This guide does not assume a tariff or promise a fixed annual saving.
How Can You Keep the Project Within Budget?
Agree the privacy and performance requirements early. If suitable glazing is already in place, ask whether retrofit film is appropriate. If you are replacing the glazing anyway, compare the complete integrated-glass option rather than just the switching material.
Coordinate sizes, cable routes and controls before manufacture and before surrounding finishes are completed. Simplifying controls may reduce the scope where it still meets your needs, but do not remove necessary safety, thermal or environmental requirements simply to lower the headline price.
What to Send for a Switchable Glass Quote
- Project location or postcode, the intended use and your target programme.
- Approximate panel widths, heights and quantities, with drawings if available.
- Whether the glazing is internal or external, new or existing.
- The required switching states and any safety, thermal, acoustic or solar-control requirements.
- Details of the frames or glazing system, plus photographs for a retrofit.
- Your preferred controls and any electrical or automation plans.
- Whether you need supply-only or installation, and any access restrictions.
You do not need a finished technical specification to start the conversation. Tell us which details are provisional so we can distinguish an initial estimate from a quotation based on confirmed requirements.
